was a Member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2014 for the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, and Vice Chairman of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence. After earning his degree in Journalism from the University of Vilnius, he started working in Journalism and the Diplomatic Service. He had been Foreign policy adviser to the President of the Republic of Lithuania (1993-1996) and Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Lithuania from 2002-2004. Since 1993 he has held the rank of an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania. He also serves as a Member of the Advisory Board of the Center for Global Politics.
